Can I build it?
Most people are taught how a thing works. Far fewer get asked whether they could make one. That second question is harder, and it is the one AEROV exists to put in front of students.
How it started
Everyone has the idea. Saying it is the hard part.
Three of us worked in the same place and barely spoke. Two introverts, and one who is not, which is the only reason anything got said at all.
Then one ordinary day the conversation drifted off work. It turned out two of us had been carrying the same idea around, separately, and neither had ever mentioned it.
We asked the third. That made three.
What came next was not cinematic. Months of meetings. Long arguments about what this should actually be. On the argument became a company.
All of it out of one question we had to ask ourselves before we ever put it to a student. Can I build it?
The name
One of us wanted the sky. Two of us wanted the water.
We could have argued it out and picked a side. Instead we kept both, and the name is just that decision written down: AERO from aeromodelling, ROV from remotely operated vehicles.
It is also why the site makes you choose a world at the door. Sky and Sea are not a design flourish. They are the two halves of the company, and we kept them both because the engineering on each side teaches something the other cannot.

A propeller will spin the wrong way at least once. A glider will nose into the grass. A seal will leak the first time it goes in the water. None of that is the process going wrong, it is the process working.
Our mentors are there to guide, not to prevent every mistake. The ones a student catches and fixes themselves are the ones that stay learned, and the only real difference between a beginner and an engineer is how many times they have been around this loop.
